Triarii United: Founded September 25th, 2008
Triarii United has both literal and metaphorical meaning. The initial concept for the Legion name was formed from discussions that identified two central themes which embodied the spirit and image of the Legion's founding members. The first theme was veteran experience. Members of TU have been involved with counter-strike since its beta days and have been responsible for administrating public counter strike servers for large CS:S gaming communities. Whether it's building a functional community both inside and out of the server walls, administrating and enforcing a gaming server, or designing and creating the vision and image of a gaming community, the founding members possess the veteran leadership, experience, and knowledge to successfully execute these goals.
The second theme identified was unity. Over the course of years, the founding members have developed a strong unity and friendship through ties that reach both within the walls of CS:S gaming and have transcended outside to bonds that have formed beyond the online gaming realm. The founding members are not just an online gaming community, the members within this Legion have come to know each other personally and in many ways represent the ties of family. This family like style is unquestionably our most important characteristic. The members of [TU] are friends, not colleagues. The community of [TU] is a family, not a "business". Our atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going. We are gamers first and will enforce the rules only when necessary. We've come together here at [TU] not just for counter-strike, but for the people and friendships that exist here.
With these two themes in mind, veteran experience and unity, the founding members identified two literal representations that emulate these ideals. The first, United, was clearly identified for the descriptive parallels it shares with unity. The second, Triarii, was identified based on its reference to veteran troops within the Roman Legion. The Triarii (Singular: Triarius), were elite veteran spearmen in the Legion armies of the early Roman Republic. Within the ancient Roman Legions, ground troops were assembled from the citizenry. Based on their wealth and experience in battle, the Legion troops were formed into three battle lines. The three battle lines were used in a marching combat formation when attacking an enemy position or defending a position. The first line, known as the "Hastati", were usually made up of poorer and less experienced troops. They had a lighter armor(usually a breastplate), a sword(also known as Gladii) and javelins. The 2nd line, known as the "Principes", were slightly more experienced and equipped with more advanced chain or plate mail armor, a sword, and Javelins. The 3rd line was called the "Triarii' and consisted of the most experienced veterans within the Roman Legions. These troops were also the wealthiest and best equipped troops of the Roman Legion ground forces. They wore the same armor as the "Principes", had a sword and Javelins, and carried a large shield and a pike. The Triarii were the most experienced in battle and formed the 3rd line to make a final infantry stand in the event that the Hastati and the Principe failed. They were the last line of defense.
Together, [TU] Triarii United, boldy represents the personality of this Legion.
